AI Boom Creates More Than 750,000 Jobs in the US

By Maria Irene · 5 Oct 2026

Artificial intelligence is changing the US job market in a way that is creating new work alongside the disruption caused by the technology.

LinkedIn estimates cited in recent reporting show that more than 750,000 AI-related jobs have been created in the United States since 2023. The growth has been spread across roles involved in building, training and supporting AI systems, as well as the infrastructure needed to run them.

Data annotation has recorded the largest increase, with about 282,000 new positions created over the period covered by the data. Data centre jobs followed with around 117,000, while AI engineering roles accounted for about 105,000.

Together, those three categories represent roughly 504,000 new jobs.

The figures highlight an important part of the AI economy that can be easy to overlook. Building AI systems requires people to prepare and assess data, while the computing power behind those systems requires large data centres and the workers needed to build and operate them.

AI engineers remain an important part of that expansion, with demand growing as companies develop and deploy new AI products and systems.

The growth is also reflected in pay. The supplied LinkedIn estimates put the median salary for AI-related positions at around US$180,000, compared with about US$80,000 across all jobs.

That difference reflects the demand for specialised skills, although salary levels vary considerably depending on the role, experience, location and employer.

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is another factor behind the employment growth. Technology companies are investing heavily in data centres and computing capacity, creating work across technical and infrastructure-related areas.

Recent Wall Street Journal reporting has also pointed to the scale of the US AI infrastructure build-out, with data centres becoming a major source of investment and employment.

The numbers do not mean that AI will create jobs in every occupation or that workers facing automation will automatically move into these new roles. AI adoption is also changing existing jobs, with some tasks becoming automated and employers reassessing the skills they need.

For workers, the emerging picture is therefore more complicated than a simple increase or decrease in employment.

Some of the fastest-growing opportunities are appearing in jobs that support AI systems rather than jobs that involve developing AI models themselves. Data annotation, infrastructure and data centre work show how the technology is creating demand across different parts of the economy.

The US experience suggests that the AI boom is already reshaping employment, with new opportunities emerging alongside concerns about automation, skills and job security.
