Toko is emerging as a project that aims to expand what decentralised applications can do on the Internet Computer, with its supporters arguing that it could build on the foundations laid by the Service Nervous System rather than replace them outright.
The Service Nervous System, or SNS, introduced a standard framework for community ownership on the Internet Computer. It allowed applications to transition from founder control to governance by token holders, with staking, proposals, treasury management and on chain control of the application built into a common architecture.
That framework remains an important part of the Internet Computer ecosystem because it gives projects a recognised governance structure and a consistent set of components approved through the Network Nervous System process. At the same time, developers have increasingly debated whether the SNS model is designed primarily for governing individual applications rather than supporting more complex on chain economies.
Toko’s proposition is broader. The project focuses on programmable assets, embedded data infrastructure and orchestration tools that are intended to support large scale economic applications running directly on chain.
At the centre of the architecture is icyDB, an embedded SQL database that operates inside a canister. The project says this allows applications to maintain structured, queryable state where computation and data remain together on the Internet Computer, reducing dependence on conventional cloud databases for core application logic.
Alongside icyDB is Canic, an orchestration layer that is intended to help applications scale across large numbers of canisters distributed across Internet Computer subnets. The aim is to give developers a framework for deployment, scaling and lifecycle management without requiring each team to build those systems independently.
Toko also introduces a programmable asset model in which tokens and NFTs can carry state, permissions, behavioural rules and relationships with other assets and systems. Rather than functioning only as ledger balances or static digital objects, assets can evolve over time according to predefined logic.
Supporters argue that this changes the focus from governing an application to governing the assets, communities and economic systems that exist within it. A game, for example, may contain multiple asset classes, competitions and communities, each with different governance requirements. A tokenised real world asset may involve separate custodial arrangements, redemption rules and stakeholders.
One of the ideas discussed by the project is governance at the level of individual tokens, NFTs or collections. That would allow governance structures to be applied to specific assets or communities instead of requiring every decision to be handled through a single project wide DAO.
Migration from existing SNS projects remains one of the more challenging questions. Existing SNS ledgers already use ICRC standards for fungible tokens, and any transition would need to preserve balances, ownership, treasuries, staking positions, dissolve delays, voting rights and proposal history.
Developers involved in the discussion have suggested that a credible migration process would require governance approval, deterministic state snapshots, verifiable proofs of preserved balances and locks, protection against double spending and permanent access to historical transaction and governance records.
Another area receiving attention is ledger archiving. A system that supports large scale economic activity would need a distributed archive capable of preserving transaction history in a verifiable and efficiently indexed form. Toko’s database and orchestration layers are presented as potential building blocks for that type of archive infrastructure.
The debate ultimately centres on whether governance alone is sufficient for the next phase of decentralised application development on the Internet Computer. The SNS established a standard model for community ownership, while Toko is attempting to extend that model into programmable assets, richer application state and large scale on chain economic systems.
Whether Toko becomes a widely adopted layer within the Internet Computer ecosystem will depend on technical execution, security, compatibility with existing standards and community trust. For now, the project is drawing attention because it is being framed as a continuation of the SNS story rather than a clean break from it.
