Chronolock launches Web3 platform for time-locked NFTs

Chronolock has introduced a Web3 platform that allows users to create time-locked digital content secured on the Internet Computer. The system uses blockchain infrastructure and advanced cryptography to ensure files remain inaccessible until the exact moment set by their creator.

At the heart of the platform is verifiable encrypted threshold key derivation (VETKD), a cryptographic process that guarantees no party, including Chronolock itself, can decrypt content before its scheduled unlock time. Each time-locked file is minted as an NFT compliant with ICRC-7 standards, combining proof of ownership with a mathematically enforced lock.

The ecosystem runs on CRNL, Chronolock’s native token. New users receive 200 CRNL on first login through Internet Identity, a passwordless authentication method that avoids storing personal data. CRNL is required for creating time-locked NFTs, sending peer-to-peer transfers, and participating in a referral programme where users earn 20 CRNL for every new member who joins via their unique link.

The process of creating a chronolock is designed to be straightforward. After uploading a file, users set an unlock date, decide whether access should be public or private, and add metadata. Once finalised, the content is encrypted, stored on chain, and displayed in a collection with a visual countdown. When the timer reaches zero, eligible recipients can decrypt the file in their browser, with cryptographic proof that the lock was enforced.

Transfers of CRNL between users carry a minimal transaction fee, taking advantage of the Internet Computer’s efficiency. The system is aimed at both technical users and newcomers, with use cases ranging from digital wills and inheritance planning to scheduled creative releases, educational content and timed investment strategies.

Chronolock’s roadmap points to further features designed to expand its utility and strengthen its position as a platform for temporal digital ownership.
