DFINITY applies for .icp domain in ICANN’s 2026 programme

By Maria Irene · 9 Oct 2026

DFINITY has applied for the .icp top-level domain through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), opening the possibility of a new web address extension for projects and services across the Internet Computer ecosystem.

If approved, the domain could allow addresses such as openchat.icp and oisy.icp to work through standard web browsers, potentially making it easier for users to access services using shorter, recognisable names.

The application forms part of ICANN’s 2026 New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) programme, which allows eligible organisations to apply to operate new domain extensions. The programme is designed to expand the available options for internet addresses, with applications subject to a multi-stage assessment process.

The .icp application would still need to pass the relevant evaluations before the extension could become operational. Applying for a domain does not guarantee approval, and ICANN’s application records state that most statuses remain subject to change as the process advances.

For the Internet Computer ecosystem, an approved .icp extension could offer another way to identify and access services. However, the practical impact would depend on how the domain is implemented, how services adopt it and whether users can access the addresses reliably through the wider internet’s domain name system.

The proposal comes as ICANN considers a new wave of top-level domain applications in its 2026 round. Any decision on .icp will depend on the outcome of the formal review process.

The application details and status can be checked through ICANN’s New gTLD Application Publication System.
