DFINITY continues WebAssembly partnership with Carnegie Mellon research centre

By Maria Irene · 25 Sept 2026

The DFINITY Foundation is continuing its partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s WebAssembly Research Center, extending a relationship focused on the development and research of WebAssembly technology.

DFINITY said it began working with WebAssembly during the technology’s early development and built the Internet Computer around the WebAssembly execution environment. The foundation said its engineers have since supported the technology’s development by sharing technical experience, providing feedback and contributing changes to improve various operations.

Carnegie Mellon launched its WebAssembly Research Center in 2023 to bring together researchers from academia and industry to explore current and future applications of WebAssembly. DFINITY was one of the centre’s three founding industry members, alongside Shopify and Siemens.

WebAssembly is an open-source technology designed to provide a portable, secure and efficient way to run code. While it was initially developed for web applications, Carnegie Mellon says it is increasingly being used in areas including edge computing, distributed computing infrastructure and embedded systems.

For DFINITY, WebAssembly is a core part of the Internet Computer’s architecture. The foundation says applications running on the network are executed as WebAssembly modules, allowing developers to deploy software directly on the decentralised platform.

The partnership also comes as research into WebAssembly expands into newer areas. Carnegie Mellon’s current research programme includes work on AI in WebAssembly, examining how the technology could support coding agents through improved sandboxing, tool use, reliability and resource efficiency.

The university’s WebAssembly Research Center continues to bring researchers and industry participants together through research projects, publications and events. Its programme includes work on WebAssembly engines, performance, security, instrumentation and new interfaces.

For DFINITY, continuing the relationship provides an avenue for its engineers to contribute practical experience from building on WebAssembly, while the research centre offers an academic setting for investigating how the technology can develop beyond its existing uses.
