DFINITY is outlining a move towards an Open SaaS model that combines open-source business software with AI capabilities running on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP).
The proposal centres on an approach in which a broad suite of business applications could be installed and used in a way similar to downloading a phone app. The software would be open source, available without ongoing licence fees and designed to allow users and developers to modify or remix applications for their own needs.
DFINITY describes the model as part of a wider shift towards what it calls “AIware on ICP”, positioning AI as a core layer across business applications rather than as a standalone tool.
The organisation argues that conventional software-as-a-service products can become expensive as businesses add users, applications and features. Under the Open SaaS model being promoted by DFINITY, software would instead be freely available and capable of being adapted by its users.
A central element of the proposal is a shared AI assistant that can work across different applications. Rather than requiring businesses to use separate AI tools for individual software products, the concept envisages one assistant operating across the wider suite.
DFINITY’s position is that running these applications with AI capabilities on ICP could help enterprises automate tasks and make software workflows more efficient. The organisation has yet to provide detailed benchmarks showing how the proposed approach would compare with established SaaS platforms in areas such as cost, performance and enterprise-scale deployment.
The open-source model could give businesses and developers greater control over the software they use. It could also allow organisations to adapt applications without waiting for a commercial vendor to introduce a particular feature.
At the same time, free software does not necessarily eliminate the costs associated with running enterprise systems. Businesses may still need to account for infrastructure, development, integration, support, security and governance. How those costs compare with conventional SaaS subscriptions will depend on how the Open SaaS model is implemented.
DFINITY’s announcement comes as AI increasingly becomes embedded in business software, from productivity and customer management tools to data analysis and automation. The organisation is positioning ICP as the infrastructure for a different approach, where applications, AI capabilities and data services can operate within an open environment.
The proposed Open SaaS suite is still a developing concept, and details around the applications, availability, pricing of underlying infrastructure and enterprise support have yet to be fully outlined.
For DFINITY, the aim is to move towards software that can be installed easily, accessed freely and modified by its users, while providing a common AI assistant across applications. The organisation says it plans to share more about its ICP-based cloud engine and the technology behind the model in the near future.
