DFINITY founder Dominic Williams has highlighted the idea of an open-source order book exchange that operates entirely on-chain, pointing to the potential of blockchain infrastructure to provide a complete, transparent record of transactions.
Williams shared the comments while discussing MULTI/DEX, a decentralised exchange project that is being developed around an on-chain trading model. In his post, he described the concept as an open-source order book exchange that could be updated by a DAO and maintain a ledger of every transaction on-chain.
The comments come as questions around transparency and custody continue to attract attention across the crypto exchange sector. Recent blockchain analysis has traced around 700 million TRX that moved from wallets associated with HTX before the exchange’s June proof-of-reserves disclosure. The transfers included movements to addresses associated with Poloniex and Binance, although blockchain transactions alone do not establish who ultimately controlled every address involved.
Against that backdrop, Williams’ comments focus on a different exchange model, where transaction activity and trading records are maintained through on-chain infrastructure rather than relying solely on an exchange’s internal records.
The MULTI/DEX platform currently describes itself as a multi-chain decentralised exchange with an interface that allows users to search and examine trading history. Its system includes records of orders, deposits and withdrawals, with data available for querying and export.
Williams has also described MULTI/DEX as moving towards production, with recent updates referring to developments including short-liquidation handling and its insurance fund.
The wider debate highlights an important distinction in crypto markets: being able to verify transactions on a blockchain does not automatically establish who controls a wallet, why funds were moved or whether an exchange’s liabilities are fully represented by its disclosed assets.
For Williams, the appeal of an open, on-chain order book lies in making transaction records directly verifiable. The proposal places transparency and publicly accessible transaction history at the centre of how a decentralised exchange could operate.
