Internet Computer founder Dominic Williams has shared a vision for how enterprise software could work through an ICP cloud engine, highlighting a model where businesses could install, customise and manage SaaS services with less complexity.
Responding to a request for a summary of ICP cloud engine and Open SaaS for a large enterprise, Williams described a future where organisations could access a wide range of software services without the traditional administrative burden associated with managing enterprise platforms.
Williams said services running on the cloud engine would be designed to require minimal maintenance, comparing the experience to managing a mobile application. He also highlighted security and resilience features, stating that applications would be designed to resist infrastructure-level attacks and remain highly available.
Another focus of his comments was the role of artificial intelligence within these services. Williams said Open SaaS applications could allow AI tools, with user-approved permissions, to access data across applications, support analysis and help automate tasks. He pointed to changing workplace habits, where many users are increasingly relying on AI chat interfaces instead of traditional software screens to complete tasks.
The ICP founder also described the possibility of users modifying and adapting software through AI, while continuing to receive improvements from the original application developers. According to Williams, AI could help combine customised versions with future updates from upstream releases.
Williams said Open SaaS would follow an open-source model, allowing the software to remain freely available.
The comments reflect a broader shift across the technology sector towards AI-assisted software development and more flexible enterprise tools. While companies continue to adopt cloud-based services, questions around security, data access and governance remain key considerations for organisations evaluating new approaches to business software.
