Dominic Williams Points to Decentralised Cloud as Data Centre Risks Grow

Dominic Williams, founder of DFINITY and the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), has renewed the case for decentralised cloud infrastructure following claims circulating during the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran that data centre facilities could become military targets.

Dom shared a post on X referring to an unverified claim attributed to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which alleged that a cruise missile strike had destroyed Amazon Web Services’ Bahrain data hub. At the time of writing, there has been no independent confirmation of the claim, and Amazon has not publicly confirmed any such attack.

Responding to the reports, Williams argued that decentralised cloud computing offers greater resilience than conventional data centre models. He wrote that ICP cloud engines could help address what he described as a growing threat, saying data centres are increasingly becoming targets during conflict and acts of terrorism.

According to Dom, applications hosted on the Internet Computer continue operating even if individual data centres go offline because workloads are distributed across independent nodes rather than relying on a single facility. He also said the network’s tamperproof architecture protects services from infrastructure-level attacks.

The comments come as governments, technology companies and cybersecurity experts continue to examine the resilience of critical digital infrastructure during periods of geopolitical instability. Large cloud providers typically operate services across multiple regions and availability zones to reduce the impact of outages, although physical attacks on infrastructure remain a concern for operators worldwide.

Dom has long argued that decentralised infrastructure can provide an alternative to traditional cloud platforms by distributing computing and storage across independently operated data centres. Supporters say this model can improve resilience and reduce single points of failure, while broader adoption continues to depend on factors including performance, cost, developer uptake and enterprise demand.

His latest remarks place the Internet Computer’s decentralised architecture within a wider discussion about digital infrastructure resilience, as organisations assess how cloud services can remain available during both cyber incidents and physical disruptions.
