Ethereum Turns Eight: CZ Shares a Touching Throwback

In a heartfelt social media post on 30 July, Changpeng Zhao, the founder and CEO of Binance, acknowledged the 8th anniversary of Ethereum, the decentralized, open-source blockchain with smart contract functionality. Ethereum, also known as Ether or ETH, is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, after Bitcoin.

Zhao, better known as CZ in the crypto community, offered a glimpse into the past with a tweet dated back to May 2, 2015, in Tokyo, just before the official launch of Ethereum. In his post, CZ recalled hosting Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, at his apartment. “He was already working on and talking about ETH non-stop,” CZ said. Yet despite being so close to the action, CZ admitted he didn’t invest in ETH at the time, calling it a “miss of a lifetime.”

However, CZ views the oversight in a positive light, suggesting that if he had invested in ETH at the time, he might not have had the “need or drive” to start Binance. His reflections serve as a reminder of how unpredictable the crypto world can be, with many paths and opportunities presenting themselves at different times.

“I was ‘in between jobs’ (and shorts & flip flops). Life gives you not too many, but multiple chances,” he added, encouraging his followers to work hard and seize second chances when they come. It’s a nod to his own journey, where he transitioned from being jobless to becoming the founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume.

This anecdote is a testament to CZ’s humble beginnings and his rise in the crypto world. It also highlights the growth and impact of Ethereum since its inception eight years ago. Ethereum has undeniably had a substantial influence on the crypto ecosystem, providing the infrastructure for countless decentralized applications and token launches.

While CZ humorously recalled missing out on buying ETH before it became a big hit, his story is also a powerful reminder that in the world of technology and innovation, opportunities are aplenty. One missed opportunity does not necessarily mean a missed fortune; it could potentially lead to a different, equally prosperous path.

Ethereum’s 8th anniversary marks an important milestone for the crypto community, and CZ’s reflections on the occasion offer valuable insights into the unpredictable but rewarding journey of entrepreneurship in the crypto sphere. In closing, he left us with an encouraging note: “Work hard, don’t miss the 2nd chances.” A fitting tribute on Ethereum’s 8th birthday and a mantra for anyone navigating the ever-evolving world of crypto.
