Known as Street Cy₿er, this group of graffiti artists, musicians, and Bitcoin enthusiasts is on a mission to spread the word about cryptocurrency, one mural at a time.
Since its formation in January 2023, Street Cy₿er has grown to include over 100 members from various backgrounds, ranging from educators and activists to artists and journalists. Their canvas? The vibrant streets of European cities, including Barcelona, London, Berlin, Madrid, Prague, Riga (Latvia), and Tallin (Estonia). With each stroke of their spray cans, they aim to raise awareness about cryptocurrency and challenge the status quo of traditional finance.
Street Cy₿er’s work is as diverse as its members. Some pieces feature the iconic Bitcoin logo, while others carry powerful messages about the perceived shortcomings of the traditional financial system and how Bitcoin can offer an alternative. One of their thought-provoking creations, “Buy Bitcoin Defund The State,” encourages viewers to contemplate how Bitcoin can contribute to a more liberated society by diminishing the role of the state in people’s lives.
Street, one of the founding members of Street Cy₿er, believes that the intersection of street art and Bitcoin is a potent force for change. He states, “The symbiosis between street art and Bitcoin is a powerful one. By working together, these two movements help to create a more just and equitable world.”
The collective’s online gallery showcases more than 70 images of their Bitcoin-inspired artwork. According to Street, Bitcoin serves as a peaceful means of protesting against the state and its policies, offering an escape from the constraints of the traditional financial system. Street envisions a “new society” built on individual freedom and voluntary cooperation, aligning with the beliefs of cryptocurrency anarchists worldwide.
One unique aspect of Bitcoin, its scarcity, plays a pivotal role in Street’s vision for a more peaceful world. He argues that Bitcoin’s limited supply would make it difficult for governments to finance wars, as they cannot simply print more Bitcoin to fund military endeavors. This transparency would also make it challenging for state actors to conceal war spending, potentially deterring conflicts and promoting peace.
Moreover, Street contends that if governments were to fund education using Bitcoin rather than printing money, global free education could become a reality. Bitcoin’s scarcity would force governments to allocate it judiciously, fostering greater accountability and prioritizing education as a top concern.
Not all of Street Cy₿er’s work carries a political message, though. The collective also appeals to pop culture enthusiasts by incorporating Bitcoin symbolism into beloved characters like Mario and Ronald McDonald.
