How to create and launch an ICRC-1 token on the Internet Computer without code

Creating a cryptocurrency token can involve smart contract development, testing and deployment costs. On the Internet Computer, users can create an ICRC-1 token through browser-based tools without writing the ledger code themselves.
ICPay’s token creator is designed to let users configure and deploy an ICRC-1 token using Internet Identity. The platform’s published guide says the process can be completed in under five minutes, although the actual time can vary depending on the user and network conditions.
ICRC-1 is the adopted base standard for fungible tokens on the Internet Computer. It defines core functions including transfers, balances and token metadata. ICRC-2 extends ICRC-1 with approval and transfer-from functions, allowing a token holder to authorise another party, such as a decentralised application, to transfer tokens on their behalf.
The ICRC-1 account model also supports optional subaccounts. A single principal can control multiple accounts by using different subaccount values, which can be useful for applications that need to separate balances.
Before creating a token, users need to decide on basic parameters such as the token name, symbol, number of decimal places, transfer fee and initial supply. The ICRC-1 standard supports metadata for the token name, symbol, decimals and default transfer fee.
For example, a project could configure a token called Sovereign Cloud Coin with the symbol SOV, eight decimal places, a transfer fee of 0.0001 SOV and an initial supply of one million SOV. These are example settings rather than requirements of the ICRC-1 standard.
Using ICPay’s token creation process, users first sign in with Internet Identity and enter the token’s metadata. They then confirm the required ICP funding for canister creation before the ledger canister is deployed.
ICPay currently lists 0.5 ICP as the minimum amount for its canister creation flow. The platform says the amount covers the Cycles Minting Canister creation requirement, with any remaining value becoming initial cycles for the canister. The exact amount required can depend on the current ICP-to-cycles conversion rate and the creation requirements.
Once the ledger canister is deployed, the creator receives a canister ID and can manage the newly created token. The initial supply is assigned according to the token’s deployment configuration.
Launching the token is only the first part of the process. A project that wants to make its token available for trading would still need to establish liquidity and meet the requirements of the relevant decentralised exchange. ICPSwap, for example, provides liquidity pools on the Internet Computer.
Tokens can subsequently be distributed to other ICRC-compatible accounts using their principal and optional subaccount information. Developers can also use ICRC-2 functionality where their applications require approval and transfer-from operations.
For ongoing management, ICPay provides canister tools for monitoring and managing deployed canisters. Token creators should also consider controller permissions, cycle balances, supply management, transfer fees and security before distributing a token publicly.
The no-code approach lowers the technical barrier to deploying an ICRC-1 ledger, but creating the token does not by itself establish market value, liquidity, exchange availability or demand. Those aspects depend on the project’s own distribution strategy, applications and market activity.
Dear Reader,
Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.
We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.
