IC Commerce Brings AI-Powered E-Commerce to the Internet Computer

A new open-source e-commerce platform has arrived on the Internet Computer, combining a full-stack architecture with artificial intelligence to simplify the creation and management of online stores. IC Commerce, announced by DFINITY COO Josh Drake, represents one of the first fully AI-coded commercial solutions on the network, offering a complete set of features for store administration, product management, and payment processing.

Built with a Rust backend using ic-sqlite for persistent data storage and a React/TypeScript frontend, the platform is designed to run entirely on ICP. Authentication is handled through Internet Identity, with the first login automatically granting admin privileges. Payments are integrated via Stripe, enabling merchants to process transactions without leaving the ICP environment.

The platform offers a fully functional admin dashboard, allowing store owners to manage inventory, track orders, define shipping zones, and adjust settings with granular control. The architecture is inspired by Solidus, a popular open-source commerce solution, and adapted to leverage the advantages of running on a decentralised, canister-based network.

Drake emphasised the role of AI in the project, noting that IC Commerce was generated with the help of Claude code, with plans to incorporate further tools like Caffeine to streamline development even more. This approach reduces the need for manual coding, allowing developers and store operators to focus on design and business logic rather than repetitive implementation tasks.

Being open-source, IC Commerce invites community feedback and contributions, reflecting a collaborative ethos common in the ICP ecosystem. Developers can access the code via GitHub, experiment with deployments, and suggest improvements. The project also provides an opportunity to explore how fully decentralised infrastructure can support commercial applications without relying on traditional cloud services.

IC Commerce marks a step towards broadening the types of applications built on ICP, moving beyond typical canister-based services and experimental tools into practical, user-facing solutions. By combining AI-generated code with a robust tech stack and established e-commerce patterns, it aims to offer both flexibility for developers and usability for merchants.

While the platform is still in its early stages, the launch demonstrates how decentralised networks can support real-world applications, handling authentication, payments, and inventory management entirely on-chain. As AI-assisted development continues to evolve, projects like IC Commerce suggest a future where launching a complex, fully featured e-commerce store could be faster and more accessible than ever before.

Community engagement and iterative improvement will be key to the platform’s success. Its open-source nature allows early adopters to test the system, report issues, and contribute enhancements, shaping how decentralised commerce could develop on ICP in the coming months.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.

Your support goes a long way.
