ICP aims to expand decentralised alternatives to cloud giants

The Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) is being positioned as a way to reduce reliance on a small number of major cloud providers by enabling independent node providers to participate in running computing services.

The comments, posted on X by ICP community account Snassy, argue that ICP should not be viewed as a direct replacement for services such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. Instead, it is described as a protocol designed to allow more providers to compete in cloud computing.

The post compares ICP’s role to that of TCP/IP, the core protocol suite that allows devices and networks to communicate across the internet. Under the model described, independent providers could contribute computing infrastructure through the ICP network, potentially creating a larger and more distributed provider base.

The post argues that having a single provider replace existing cloud giants would simply recreate the centralisation problem. Its stated aim is instead to allow hundreds, thousands or potentially millions of independent node providers to participate.

The comments also frame decentralised computing as a response to growing concerns around concentration in cloud services and the resilience of digital infrastructure.

Snassy further suggested that demand for more resilient computing infrastructure is growing, pointing to calls from international organisations and others for stronger digital resilience.

The claims reflect the broader vision behind ICP, although the scale of future participation and its ability to materially reduce dependence on major cloud providers will depend on adoption, infrastructure growth and competition within the wider computing market.
