ICP community audit corrects tokenomics tracking assumptions

A discussion on the DFINITY Developer Forum has prompted a reassessment of how newly minted ICP enters circulation, after community researchers found that some tokenomics tracking models had relied on incorrect assumptions.

The issue emerged when tracking tools suggested that newly minted ICP rewards were flowing directly into the liquid market supply. A closer examination of on-chain data showed that much of the newly created ICP was instead being automatically staked, locked into neurons or allocated to node provider operational accounts.

The correction has drawn attention to a broader question about how tokenomics data is interpreted, even when the underlying blockchain data is publicly available.

Researchers involved in the discussion said the discrepancy came from the model used to classify minted tokens rather than from the blockchain ledger itself. The revised analysis indicates that newly minted rewards do not necessarily become immediately available for trading on secondary markets.

On the Internet Computer, ICP issuance, neuron operations and reward distributions are recorded through the Network Nervous System and the ICP Ledger. Because these transactions are publicly verifiable, independent developers can examine the underlying state and compare it with community-built analytics models.

Supporters of the Internet Computer argue that this creates a different level of transparency from traditional financial reporting, where accounting revisions may emerge only after audits or company disclosures. Critics of blockchain analytics have also noted that publicly available data does not automatically produce accurate conclusions, as analytical models can still contain flawed assumptions.

The forum discussion has become an example of how open blockchain data can be independently tested and revised. Rather than revealing a protocol failure, the episode highlighted the importance of distinguishing between token creation, staking activity and liquid circulating supply.

Developers said the corrected model provides a more accurate picture of ICP circulation and demonstrates the value of ongoing public review of on-chain analytics.
