ICP turns compute into a tradable digital asset

The Internet Computer (ICP) is positioning compute as an economic asset that can be bought, held, transferred and priced through its native Cycles system.
Cycles are created by burning ICP and are consumed by applications for computing, storage and network resources. This gives compute a defined economic unit within the ICP ecosystem, linking demand for infrastructure to the network’s native token.
The model opens the door to financial products built around future computing needs. Companies could potentially hold compute reserves through what can be described as compute treasuries, while compute contracts could allow businesses to lock in future costs.
The same framework could support compute futures for businesses seeking to manage exposure to changing infrastructure demand, as well as compute markets where users buy and sell access to compute liquidity. Financing models could also use expected future compute requirements as part of their economic structure.
The proposed cycle is straightforward. Greater use of ICP applications increases demand for Cycles, which requires more ICP to be burned. That creates a link between network activity, demand for compute and the supply of ICP.
Under this model, ICP serves as the monetary layer while Cycles function as the unit used to pay for computing resources.
The idea reflects a broader shift in how digital infrastructure could be priced and managed. Rather than treating compute solely as an operating expense, businesses could begin to view future computing capacity as an economic resource that can be planned, priced and managed.
Whether compute markets, futures and financing products develop at scale will depend on adoption, liquidity and the willingness of businesses to use such instruments. For now, the Cycles model provides the underlying mechanism for treating compute as an economic commodity within the ICP network.
Dear Reader,
Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.
We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.
If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.
Your support goes a long way.
