This slow build-up contrasts with the louder noise on social media, where the project is often cast in black-and-white terms. Critics point to governance complexity and questions about decentralisation, while supporters highlight the growing list of applications running on-chain.
The broader context matters. The crypto sector still struggles with utility. Capital continues to pour into meme tokens that offer little or no service, sometimes to the tune of billions of dollars. By comparison, ICP has a functioning network with smart contract capabilities, decentralised storage and governance tools that actually work.
Utility, however, is not the same thing as guaranteed success. The market tends to reward narratives as much as working products, and ICP has at times struggled to cut through. For whales, the decision to keep accumulating suggests a longer-term bet that the market will eventually recalibrate and value working infrastructure over empty hype.
Whether that proves correct remains to be seen, but the recent trend is clear. Even as retail sentiment falters, some of the biggest players in the network are adding quietly to their stacks.
