Internet Computer upgrades 80% of Cloud Engines through NNS vote

The Internet Computer has completed a network upgrade targeting 80% of its Cloud Engines, following the adoption of NNS Proposal 144100.

According to the proposal details shared by the Internet Computer community, the upgrade moves the targeted Cloud Engines to replica version 2c2c7c9. The vote recorded 88.501% support, with 620,938,494 voting power in favour and no votes against.

The proposal was adopted and executed rapidly, highlighting how the Network Nervous System (NNS) can be used to coordinate protocol and infrastructure changes across the Internet Computer. The NNS is the network’s on-chain governance system, with proposals voted on by ICP token holders and adopted changes automatically executed by the protocol.

Cloud Engines are designed as configurable, private subnets within the Internet Computer. Operators can select the underlying nodes, providers and geographic locations, allowing organisations to have greater control over where their applications are hosted and how infrastructure is distributed.

The technology is being positioned by the Internet Computer project as an alternative approach to traditional cloud infrastructure, particularly for organisations concerned with data location, regulatory requirements and dependence on a single provider. The project’s own materials describe Cloud Engines as a way to configure infrastructure around specific hardware, providers and jurisdictions.

The upgrade comes as the Internet Computer continues developing Cloud Engines as part of its broader infrastructure strategy. Earlier this year, an NNS proposal backed the creation of a test Cloud Engine using nodes hosted across major cloud providers, with the aim of testing areas including subnet shielding, firewall isolation and registry replication.

While the latest vote demonstrates the network’s ability to coordinate an infrastructure upgrade through on-chain governance, claims about Cloud Engines replacing traditional cloud providers or delivering greater sovereignty remain part of the Internet Computer’s broader technology proposition rather than an established outcome.
