KuCoin restores services after AWS outage raises questions about crypto infrastructure

By Maria Irene · 14 Oct 2026

Cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has restored services following an Amazon Web Services (AWS) disruption that affected balance displays, account transfers, conversion orders and some trading bot functions, renewing debate about the reliance of centralised crypto platforms on external cloud providers.

KuCoin reported the disruption on 13 October, saying the AWS service issue had affected several platform features. Users could experience problems viewing their total asset balances, transferring funds between accounts, settling some Convert orders and shutting down certain trading bots.

The exchange said users’ assets remained secure and advised customers to exercise caution while displayed balances, available trading amounts and estimated liquidation prices could be inaccurate or outdated. It also warned users to check order and transfer statuses carefully to avoid duplicate operations.

In an update on 14 October, KuCoin announced that all affected services had been restored and said the incident had not affected the safety of user assets.

The incident has drawn attention from Mingle Berry Media, which argued that the disruption exposed the risks of relying on centralised infrastructure to manage access to crypto accounts and trading functions.

In a post on X, the media company pointed to the inability of some users to view balances or complete transactions during the outage. It argued that core account functions should be supported by on-chain systems operating across independent nodes, rather than depending on a single infrastructure provider.

Mingle Berry Media also referred to an AWS-related disruption in April 2025 that affected KuCoin, Binance and MEXC. Reuters reported at the time that connectivity problems at an AWS data centre disrupted services across the exchanges, including trading and withdrawal functions. The platforms subsequently reported recovery of affected services.

The latest incident highlights an important distinction in crypto services: the security of assets and the availability of the systems used to access them are separate issues. KuCoin said customer assets were not affected, but temporary problems with account information and transaction functions still created uncertainty for users.

Decentralised infrastructure may reduce reliance on individual providers in some applications, but moving account and trading functions on-chain also involves technical, security and performance considerations. The extent to which such systems can provide reliable alternatives depends on how they are designed and operated.

Mingle Berry Media said it was working on migration-related solutions and indicated that further features would be announced. It did not provide technical details or a release timeline in the post.

For now, KuCoin’s service restoration resolves the immediate disruption, while the incident has renewed questions about how crypto platforms can maintain access to account information and trading functions when third-party infrastructure fails.
