A recent update to the Ledger Suite promises to make life easier for wallet developers and users by introducing support for the ICRC-106 standard. This change aims to cut down on the steps needed to add new tokens to wallets, addressing a long-standing point of friction in the integration process.
Until now, adding a token meant entering two separate canister IDs — one for the ledger canister, which stores transaction data and account balances, and another for the associated index canister, which allows clients to retrieve an account’s full transaction history. While functional, this setup often created extra work for developers and confusion for users unfamiliar with canister architecture.
The update changes that by allowing a ledger canister to store and return the principal of its associated index canister. Wallets can now get this information directly through a new icrc106_get_index_principal endpoint, meaning that only the ledger canister ID is needed during token setup. The index canister is found automatically, removing the need for manual entry of two separate IDs.
Ledgers within the chain fusion network have already been upgraded, with SNS token ledgers set to follow. Independent ledger deployments can adopt the same functionality by upgrading to the latest ledger suite release and setting the index_principal parameter in the upgrade arguments.
The shift to ICRC-106 support reflects a broader push towards smoother user experiences and reduced technical barriers in token integration. For developers, it is a practical quality-of-life change that removes repetitive setup steps. For users, it means fewer details to manage when adding assets to a wallet.
