Menese has released a new set of updates for its privacy-focused shielded ledger, a project designed to allow confidential transfers and private balance lookups while keeping transactions verifiable.
The latest changes follow a recent technical review and are now available through the project’s open-source repository on GitHub. The developers say the ledger is intended to support private movement of stablecoins and other digital assets without exposing transaction amounts, balances or the link between sender and recipient.
According to the project documentation, notes and cryptographic keys remain in the user’s browser, while zero-knowledge proofs are verified within the ledger itself. The ledger publishes commitments and nullifiers rather than readable transaction details, with the aim of preventing the creation of a public transaction graph.
A key part of the update is the addition of private lookups through a private information retrieval system. The project says users can query their own records without revealing which record they are searching for, and that the ledger processes queries without learning the requested index.
The developers argue that privacy for payments requires protection of both transfers and read access. Public blockchains generally allow anyone to inspect transaction histories, balances and payment relationships. The Menese design seeks to reduce that level of transparency by limiting what is written to the ledger and what can be inferred from wallet queries.
The project has been built on the Internet Computer, where the team says one of the technical challenges was implementing a Groth16 zero-knowledge verifier directly in Motoko rather than relying on a native cryptographic precompile. Documentation accompanying the release includes details on the verifier, testing framework and performance measurements.
Menese has also published extensive documentation on its testing process, trusted setup requirements and security assumptions. The repository states that the current deployment is a working system and a valueless demo, with a single-party setup for demonstration purposes. The team says a production deployment would require a multi-party trusted setup ceremony and further independent review.
Privacy-focused payment systems remain an active area of research across several blockchain and distributed ledger networks. Supporters argue that financial privacy is necessary for many commercial and personal use cases, while critics have long questioned how such systems can balance confidentiality with regulatory oversight and compliance obligations.
The latest Menese release adds new functionality for confidential transfers and private lookups, while placing much of the project’s design and verification process in the public domain through its open-source repository.
