Musk says ‘Fiat is hopeless’ as he backs Bitcoin in political tweet

Elon Musk has once again stirred conversation around digital assets, this time responding to a user asking whether the so-called America Party would support Bitcoin. Musk replied bluntly, “Fiat is hopeless, so yes.”

The exchange followed a tweet by user @BasedBeffJezos, who remarked that being a centrist is now viewed as a radical position. Musk replied with, “The America Party is the solution,” appearing to suggest his own idea of a political middle ground. When another user, @RenatoLima_X, asked if this hypothetical party would support Bitcoin, Musk gave the clearest endorsement he’s offered in some time.

His comment doesn’t amount to a formal policy platform, but the message was unmistakable. Coming from someone with enormous influence and a history of moving markets with his words, any endorsement of Bitcoin—even casually worded—tends to get noticed.

Musk has long had a complicated relationship with cryptocurrency. Tesla made headlines when it added Bitcoin to its balance sheet in early 2021, then reversed course by suspending Bitcoin payments due to environmental concerns. Dogecoin has received more of his public affection in recent years, with occasional tweets boosting its visibility and price. Even so, Musk has often described Bitcoin as an asset with long-term value and a hedge against inflation.

His latest remark plays into a wider narrative around the future of money, especially in the context of rising interest in political alternatives and the search for financial systems that exist outside traditional banking. Saying “Fiat is hopeless” is a strong statement, and it aligns with a view shared by parts of the crypto community who see national currencies as being increasingly fragile or manipulated.

That said, it’s still just a tweet. Musk’s history of playfully provocative comments on social media means not every statement should be treated as a declaration of intent. He has previously joked about running for political office, and his references to “the America Party” may be more about positioning or satire than an actual movement.

Bitcoin advocates, though, tend to seize on moments like this. High-profile endorsements—however fleeting—can renew interest or bring in new participants. The price of Bitcoin did not appear to react dramatically to the exchange, but it added to the steady drumbeat of conversation about institutional and ideological support for digital assets.

Whether Musk’s America Party is ever more than a tweet remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the connection between digital currency and political identity continues to grow. As traditional parties struggle with internal division, and younger voters show increasing interest in financial alternatives, comments like these may end up having more impact than they initially seem to.

For now, Musk’s casual endorsement of Bitcoin sits in a familiar space: part economic critique, part tech optimism, and fully in line with his long-running disdain for conventional systems.
