Neutron opens hackathon registrations for browser based AI agent operating system on ICP

Neutron has opened registrations for its hackathon as the project develops a browser based agent operating system on the Internet Computer that gives users direct control over the apps and data available to AI agents.

The platform is designed around a user sovereign model where developers build applications and users choose which ones to install. Those applications can expose tools that an AI agent can access to complete tasks across multiple apps within a browser tab.

Neutron says users can instruct an agent to perform actions such as checking email, monitoring social networks, retrieving information from a files application and responding to questions using that personal knowledge base. The agent operates within a sandboxed environment where the user controls both the available applications and the context provided to the AI.

Unlike conventional desktop software, Neutron runs entirely in the browser on the Internet Computer network. Users do not install software on their local machine, and applications remain isolated within the browser environment.

The project currently uses OpenRouter for inference, allowing developers to connect language models to the operating environment. According to the team, future integration with DFINITY’s planned Intelligence Gateway would allow canister based agents to continue running even when a user’s browser tab is closed.

The approach reflects growing interest in AI agents that can coordinate actions across multiple applications rather than operating within a single interface. Questions remain around security, permissions, reliability and how users manage access to personal data, issues that have become increasingly important as agent based AI tools become more capable.

The hackathon is aimed at developers interested in building applications that can interact with AI agents through Neutron’s browser based environment. Registration is available through the project’s website at ntron.net.

The Internet Computer, allows applications to run from canisters hosted on the network, with Neutron positioning those canisters as the foundation for user controlled AI agent environments.
