PHP Goes On-Chain: WordPress and Laravel Now Run Natively on the Internet Computer

WASP has achieved a milestone by bringing PHP to the Internet Computer, allowing popular frameworks like WordPress and Laravel to run fully on-chain. This development is being viewed as an important bridge between traditional web developers and the decentralised internet.

The approach works by embedding a PHP runtime inside a canister, paired with a file system that supports uploads, themes and plugins. Alongside this sits WASQL, a custom in-canister SQL engine designed to handle storage and database needs in a way that is compatible with both WordPress and Laravel. This combination enables developers to deploy PHP applications directly with familiar commands while benefiting from blockchain-level security and verifiability.

For context, PHP continues to power the majority of the internet, with WordPress alone still running a vast share of websites worldwide. By making these frameworks available on-chain, WASP is giving millions of developers a chance to experiment with Web3 technologies without abandoning the tools they already know. Instead of rewriting applications from scratch, they can package their existing projects and move them to the Internet Computer, lowering the barrier to entry in a way that feels practical rather than experimental.

The current release already supports much of PHP’s functionality, though not yet at full coverage. Development is ongoing, with further refinements planned including more intuitive admin interfaces and service tiers catering to different scales of deployment. The intent is to make the transition smooth for solo developers while also providing larger studios and agencies with the tools they need to run scalable projects.

There are caveats. Performance and cost dynamics in a blockchain environment differ from conventional hosting. Certain PHP extensions may not yet be supported, and questions remain about how large-scale WordPress or Laravel deployments will behave when fully on-chain. Even so, the proof of concept is strong enough to attract attention, especially among those who see value in censorship-resistant publishing and transparent execution.

The arrival of PHP on the Internet Computer does not mean traditional hosting will be replaced any time soon. Instead, it signals a complementary path forward, where long-established frameworks can begin to co-exist with decentralised infrastructure. For many developers curious about Web3 but wary of its steep learning curve, WASP could represent a welcome starting point—familiar technology running in an unfamiliar but promising environment.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.

Your support goes a long way.
