Bitcoin users looking for faster transactions and lower costs now have another option, with Plug Wallet highlighting its support for ckBTC, a Bitcoin-backed token on the Internet Computer that aims to make moving and using Bitcoin quicker and more practical.
ckBTC is backed 1:1 by Bitcoin and allows users to transact with finality in around one to two seconds while paying much lower network fees than standard Bitcoin transfers. Unlike many wrapped Bitcoin solutions, ckBTC does not rely on bridges or third-party custodians. Instead, it uses the Internet Computer’s Chain-Key cryptography to interact directly with the Bitcoin network.
Plug Wallet says users can mint ckBTC directly within the wallet before sending it almost instantly to other users or deploying it across decentralised finance applications built on the Internet Computer.
The wallet positions ckBTC as a way to make Bitcoin more usable for everyday transactions and decentralised finance, where slower confirmation times and higher fees on the Bitcoin network can limit activity.
Users can also access a growing range of Bitcoin-based financial services through ckBTC. These include lending and borrowing on Liquidium, participation in applications such as Odin, and other Bitcoin finance projects within the Internet Computer ecosystem.
The approach reflects a broader effort across the Internet Computer community to expand Bitcoin’s utility while allowing users to retain control of their assets. Because ckBTC is designed to be non-custodial, users continue to manage their own funds without handing them to a central intermediary.
As Bitcoin finance continues to grow, wallets that combine direct Bitcoin access with faster settlement and lower transaction costs are competing to attract users seeking alternatives to traditional wrapped assets.
Plug Wallet is available for users interested in minting, sending and using ckBTC through its non-custodial platform.
