CycleOps Tool Helps ICP Developers Estimate Impact of Proposed Memory Price Rise

Developers working on the Internet Computer are getting a clearer picture of how a proposed rise in memory pricing could affect their applications, thanks to a new dashboard released through CycleOps.

The tool was built after discussion around NNS Proposal #140538, which suggests increasing canister memory costs on the network by 2.5 times, moving from about $5 to $12.50 per gigabyte each year. While the proposal has not yet been implemented and no start date has been announced, the change has prompted developers to consider how higher memory charges could influence operating costs.

CycleOps’ new memory cost dashboard aims to answer that question by offering projected estimates for developers who manage canisters on the network. The interface provides an overview of how an account’s memory expenses could change if the proposal is approved, alongside estimates for overall cycle spending once both memory and compute costs are combined.

The dashboard calculates expected monthly memory costs before and after the proposed pricing change. It also displays the increase in dollar terms and the percentage change to the total cycle bill. Developers can quickly compare the figures to understand how much their operating costs might shift under the new pricing structure.

Beyond the account level, the tool also breaks down projected expenses for individual canisters. A table ranks services based on how much memory they consume, allowing teams to identify which parts of their applications would experience the largest cost adjustments. This level of detail can help developers prioritise optimisation efforts or rethink how memory is used across their deployments.

CycleOps notes that all figures shown in the dashboard are estimates and will vary as applications evolve. Adding new canisters, increasing memory usage, or changing workloads will alter the projections over time. The proposed pricing update itself remains under consideration within the network’s governance process.

For development teams building on the Internet Computer, the tool offers a practical way to plan ahead. Memory pricing changes may affect each application differently depending on how resources are allocated between storage and computation.
