Dexter recently drew attention to a confusing display on CycleOps, where purchasing Cycles for 1 ICP showed 2.5 trillion Cycles valued at roughly $5.43, even though the current market price of ICP is around $3.71. He took to Twitter to ask how the numbers were calculated and suggested that a possible issue with the oracle might be responsible for the mismatch.
CycleOps responded to the report, explaining that the discrepancy exists only on the frontend and does not affect actual user charges. The displayed USD/ICP rate was being pulled from an outdated icpcoins canister, which had not been maintained and was showing an inflated value of $5.42 per ICP. The team assured users that a more reliable data source would be integrated and a fix deployed within 24 to 48 hours.
In the meantime, CycleOps recommends that users focus on the number of Cycles per ICP, which remains accurate. The incident, highlighted by Dexter, underscores the challenges decentralised platforms face when presenting real-time financial data. While the bug did not affect transactions, it sparked conversation about transparency and reliability in the rapidly evolving ICP ecosystem.
