Passkey login has gone live on the Sui mainnet, allowing users to sign in using Face ID, Touch ID or Yubikey instead of passwords or seed phrases. The update has sparked discussion across developer circles, with Dominic Williams, founder of DFINITY and architect of the Internet Computer, pointing out that the technology has been in production on ICP since 2021.
“May 2021, the Internet Computer introduced the world’s first production passkey authentication system,” Williams wrote in response to the Sui announcement. “Four and a half years later, Sui becomes the first network to follow.”
Passkey login, which removes the need for manual credentials or secret recovery phrases, has become a talking point for Web3 apps aiming to streamline user experience. But for Williams and the DFINITY team, this moment is more a reminder of the work already done than a cause for comparison.
“All roads lead to DFINITY,” he added, noting that the upcoming Internet Identity 2.0 will launch with Caffeine. The new iteration is expected to refine the original passkey-based login model and is part of a wider rollout of updated identity tools within the Internet Computer ecosystem.
Williams also reflected on a list of features that ICP introduced ahead of others – from reverse gas models and web-serving from chain, to scalable compute and efficient smart contract execution. While he acknowledged that many networks may eventually adopt similar ideas, he made a point about pace and timing: “That’s different to catching up with a moving target when you’re years behind.”
For developers building on Sui, the passkey option is now available for integration into apps. Meanwhile, for longtime ICP users, the latest move serves as a nod to early technical choices that are only now beginning to show up elsewhere.
DFINITY has not yet released full details of Internet Identity 2.0, but expectations are high as the Internet Computer continues to expand both its developer tools and real-world use cases. For those watching closely, it’s not just about who follows – it’s about who’s still setting the pace.
Dear Reader,
Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.
We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.
If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.
