OPPO has announced a bold commitment to making artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to a broader audience by integrating generative AI across its entire smartphone product line. This strategic move aims to bring AI features to approximately 50 million users by the end of 2024. By leveraging its extensive global reach and advanced technological capabilities, OPPO intends to transform how users interact with their phones, enhancing both productivity and creativity.
Billy Zhang, President of Overseas MKT, Sales and Service at OPPO, highlighted the company’s ambition: “Our relentless efforts are focused on making AI phones accessible to everyone. For the first time in the industry, OPPO is bringing generative AI to all product lines.” This initiative aligns with IDC’s latest research, which predicts a 250% growth in AI phone shipments within the sub-US$1000 segment, translating to 35 million units in 2024.
Over the past decade, OPPO has made significant strides in AI technology, filing over 5,000 patents related to AI inventions, with approximately 70% focusing on AI imaging. Since 2020, OPPO has been developing its own language models and has made significant advancements in large vision models and multimodal technology. Notably, OPPO is the first smartphone company to deploy a large language model (LLM) with 7 billion parameters directly on the device. This year alone, OPPO has introduced over 100 generative AI features to its phones, showcasing its commitment to innovation.
The company’s progress is not limited to its own advancements. OPPO is collaborating with industry leaders like Google, MediaTek, and Microsoft to enhance the AI experience on its devices. Through a partnership with Google, the Reno12 series and the next-generation Find X Flagship will feature Google’s Gemini family LLMs, bringing innovative features such as AI Toolbox, which includes AI Writer and AI Recording Summary features. In collaboration with MediaTek, efforts are being made to tune chips for enhanced storage and computational efficiency in future flagship models. Moreover, partnering with Microsoft will enable next-generation OPPO phones to offer more efficient, accurate, and natural voice and text conversion, as well as improved connectivity between desktop AI and phones.
At a recent panel discussion, OPPO invited industry experts, including Susara van den Heever from Google Cloud, Philipp Ennen from MediaTek, and Francisco Jeronimo from IDC, to explore the potential of AI phones. The discussion emphasized how AI phones could democratize access to advanced AI capabilities, allowing more people to benefit from the technology.
On the productivity front, the integration of LLMs and technologies like fast transcription will enable users to process more information efficiently and enjoy real-time translation. Cross-device collaboration between desktop AI and phones is expected to further enhance productivity. For creativity, multimodal generation and motion generation technologies are revolutionizing photo editing and personalized content creation. For example, the OPPO AI Eraser feature allows users to seamlessly remove unwanted objects and quickly generate missing content, a feature currently used on average 15 times per day.
Nicole Zhang, General Manager of AI Product at OPPO, emphasized the long-term evolution from smartphones to AI phones, noting that “the intelligent OS will be embedded with AI Agents and support multimodal interaction, while third-party services will be provided in a more flexible way.” This vision points to a future where the full-stack transformation and ecosystem restructuring of AI phones will continuously evolve to offer optimal user experiences.
OPPO’s journey in AI technology is part of its broader mission to provide a better life for customers worldwide. Since the launch of its first mobile phone, “Smiley Face,” in 2008, OPPO has been in relentless pursuit of the perfect synergy of aesthetic satisfaction and innovative technology. Today, OPPO’s product range includes the Find X and Reno series, as well as services such as the ColorOS operating system and OPPO Cloud. With footprints in more than 60 countries and regions, OPPO’s 40,000 employees are dedicated to creating a more intelligent and connected world for its customers.
The democratization of AI phones is poised to redefine the mobile experience, making advanced AI capabilities accessible to a wider audience. By 2024, as generative AI becomes integrated across all OPPO product lines, millions of users will experience enhanced productivity and creativity, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more connected and intelligent world.
