Internet Identity 2.0 Rolls Out with Passkeys, Google Login and Easier Account Management

Internet Identity has moved into its next phase with the launch of version 2.0 on id.ai, introducing a redesigned interface, new authentication flows and greater flexibility for users and developers. The update represents a shift towards simpler and more secure logins across applications built on the Internet Computer.

One of the most visible changes is the end of identity numbers. Users no longer need to remember or store a string of digits to log in. Instead, the system now integrates passkeys, aligning with the latest security standards. Credentials are stored directly on a user’s device, reducing the reliance on passwords and making the login process more straightforward. Alongside this, Google login has been added as an option, giving users an alternative method that will be familiar to many.

The interface itself has been refreshed, offering a cleaner and more intuitive layout. The process is designed to be faster, with clear steps that remove much of the friction associated with account management on earlier versions. A further change allows multiple accounts to be created under the same identity, enabling users to separate roles or purposes within a single application without needing to juggle different identities. For example, someone could keep a personal and a test account for the same service without going through additional setup.

Compatibility with existing services has been a priority in the rollout. Current users of Internet Identity 1.0 are required to upgrade in order to access the 2.0 flow, but the transition has been designed to preserve continuity. Once upgraded, credentials remain valid on both versions, meaning no data or access is lost during the process. The upgrade itself can be completed directly via id.ai or triggered during login to supported applications such as Caffeine.

Developers are being asked to update their applications by switching the identity provider URL from identity.internetcomputer.org to id.ai. Until the broader migration is complete, both 1.0 and 2.0 will run in parallel, ensuring applications that have not yet adopted the new system continue to function. Statistics on upgrade rates will be shared to help developers plan the timing of their own transitions.

The legacy domains identity.ic0.app and identity.internetcomputer.org will eventually adopt the 2.0 system as well, bringing all users into alignment. At that stage, an upgrade will be necessary for continued access. For those who move early, the benefits include not only a smoother interface but also future-proofed security features.

For many, the option to use passkeys is likely to be the most welcome development, removing the need for tracking identity numbers and enhancing protection of private keys by keeping them on-device. For others, the Google login option offers a familiar route into Internet Identity that could lower barriers to entry.

Internet Identity 2.0 is now live at id.ai, marking a step towards a more flexible and secure authentication framework on the Internet Computer. Existing users are encouraged to upgrade to make use of the new features, while developers can begin adapting their applications to the new standard.
