ICP Developer Growth Draws Attention as AI Tools Expand the Builder Base

Developer activity around the Internet Computer has gained fresh attention after a developer chart from Electric Capital circulated on X, showing strong growth across the network.

Dominic Williams, founder of the Internet Computer project, shared the graph and said the current developer base visible on GitHub represents only part of what is happening across the ecosystem. He said a much larger wave of builders is emerging as AI tools make application creation easier.

Williams pointed to Caffeine, an AI system that enables users to generate applications through natural language prompts. According to him, the number of applications created using Caffeine has already reached the hundreds of thousands, with hundreds of thousands of unique users interacting with the tool each month. He noted that these users are not yet reflected in developer counts derived from GitHub activity.

Questions from the community focused on how those metrics are compiled. DFINITY developer relations lead Diego Prats asked whether the Electric Capital figures include applications built using Caffeine or whether they only track GitHub commits. Williams responded that the current data does not capture Caffeine activity, although the tool has been bringing new builders into the ecosystem as expected.

Community member ICPLEGEND1966 said that interpretation confirms the developer figures cover GitHub contributors rather than Caffeine users. Williams replied that Caffeine’s monthly unique users are already far higher, adding that efforts are underway to connect self-writing developers with GitHub so their work can be tracked in the future.

The conversation also touched on upcoming developments tied to the AI tool. When asked by Sintere7 about installing OpenClaw on the Internet Computer, Williams said the possibility may appear after the Caffeine team releases version three and confirms it is functioning as planned. He added that some community members are already building OpenClaw extensions that synchronise their state and data with ICP.

Several posts from the wider community framed the figures as a reflection of rising activity. Accounts such as DfinityToday and juicyuceyy pointed to the reported rise in monthly active developers and suggested that broader participation could continue as AI-based tools lower technical barriers to building applications.

At the same time, analyst Zacodil examined the Electric Capital dataset and shared observations about new repositories and accounts associated with the network. His review noted the number of repositories created over recent months and pointed out that some were generated through the Caffeine publishing account.

Others in the discussion argued that AI-assisted development should still count as developer activity. Developer Daryl said that if people use tools like Caffeine to build applications and publish the results on GitHub, it reflects a wider shift in how software is produced.

The exchange reflects a changing environment for blockchain development. As AI systems begin generating code and full applications, platforms such as the Internet Computer may see growing numbers of builders whose activity does not always appear in traditional developer metrics.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.

Your support goes a long way.
