DFINITY developing solution to enhance Internet Computer reliability amid AWS outage

Dominic Williams, founder of DFINITY, shared on X that a widespread AWS outage had disrupted major online platforms, including Reddit, Ring and Chime. He said the Internet Computer project is now being extended to operate across both Big Tech cloud infrastructures and specialised hardware.

The move aims to combine the vast computing capacity of commercial cloud providers with added security and reliability through decentralised architecture. While AWS has since restored services following the disruption, the incident has once again highlighted how heavily much of the internet depends on a few centralised infrastructure providers.

Williams explained that DFINITY’s approach seeks to make the Internet Computer resilient by allowing it to run across diverse environments, reducing the risk of single points of failure. The long-term goal, he said, is to ensure that large-scale computing power can be used safely and efficiently without compromising decentralisation or availability.

The AWS outage served as a reminder of the fragility of centralised systems, prompting renewed discussion around redundancy and network independence. DFINITY’s development direction appears to address those concerns directly, signalling an effort to bridge traditional cloud capacity with distributed internet infrastructure.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.
