ICP developers get a faster start with icp-cli v0.1.0 beta

Developers building on the Internet Computer have a new tool to work with as DFINITY rolls out icp-cli v0.1.0 beta. The release focuses on speeding up project setup and making local development more predictable, two areas that often slow teams down in early stages.

At the centre of the update is a new approach to project creation. Developers can now spin up projects using templates straight from the command line. DFINITY provides a small set of default templates, but the tool also allows teams to point the CLI at their own repositories. For developers working across multiple projects or organisations, this opens the door to shared starting points and more consistent setups without manual copying or reconfiguration.

Another key addition is a new local network launcher designed to keep a stable interface even as the Internet Computer replica evolves. Local testing environments can be a source of friction when tools change faster than workflows. By separating the CLI interface from specific replica versions, the launcher aims to let developers test and iterate with fewer surprises. The goal is to allow the same CLI to work across different network versions while maintaining confidence that local tests reflect real conditions.

Installation options are still limited at this stage, reflecting the beta status of the release. Developers can install the tool manually, while macOS users have the option of using an experimental Homebrew tap. A short demo video is also available to show the new CLI in action, offering a practical look at how the workflow fits together.

DFINITY has also outlined what is coming next, giving some insight into how the tool is expected to mature. Planned native support for Docker-based networks is intended to make it easier to run more complex local setups and share them across teams. This work is also tied to a future Windows-native version of the CLI. Broader distribution through common package managers is on the roadmap as well, which should lower the barrier to entry once the tool moves beyond beta.

While icp-cli v0.1.0 beta does not attempt to reinvent development on the Internet Computer, it targets everyday pain points that developers regularly encounter. Faster project creation, more resilient local testing and clearer paths to collaboration are practical improvements rather than headline-grabbing changes.

As with any early release, feedback is part of the process. DFINITY has encouraged developers to test the new CLI, experiment with templates and share their experiences. How quickly those insights feed back into future versions will shape whether icp-cli becomes a standard part of the Internet Computer developer toolkit.
