Internet Computer expands storage capacity as it targets data-heavy applications

The Internet Computer has quietly expanded its storage capacity, moving from around 50GB per subnet at launch to roughly 2TB today, a forty-fold increase. With 47 subnets now live, that translates to about 94TB of fully replicated storage across the network, positioning the platform among the largest in terms of on-chain replicated data.

Supporters of the network argue that this scale sets it apart from most blockchains, where storage is often scarce, expensive or pushed off-chain. Fully replicated storage means every node in a subnet holds the same data, a design choice that prioritises resilience, availability and verifiability. For applications that require strong guarantees around data integrity and uptime, that model remains a core part of the Internet Computer’s pitch.

At the same time, the team behind the platform appears to be acknowledging practical limits. Replicated storage is powerful, but it is also costly, both in terms of infrastructure and cycles consumed by applications. That is where the planned introduction of distributed storage for static assets comes in. By separating data that needs smart contract access from data that does not, developers will have more flexibility in how they design applications, particularly those handling large media files or archives.

This dual approach reflects a broader shift in how blockchain platforms are thinking about storage. Rather than forcing every use case into a single model, the Internet Computer is positioning itself as a place where computation and data can live together in different forms, depending on the needs of the application. For developers, that could reduce reliance on external cloud services while still keeping costs under control.

Sceptics point out that raw storage figures do not automatically translate into adoption. Competing platforms often lean on off-chain solutions that, while less decentralised, are familiar and cheap. The challenge for the Internet Computer will be to show that its growing storage capacity, combined with its smart contract model, offers enough practical advantages to justify a different way of building.

Even so, the expansion marks a clear statement of intent. As blockchain use cases move beyond simple transactions towards data-heavy services, storage is becoming a differentiator rather than a footnote. By scaling replicated storage and preparing a complementary distributed option, the Internet Computer is signalling that it wants to be taken seriously as infrastructure for applications that expect to handle real volumes of data, not just code and balances.
