A 21-year-old Ukrainian student studying in Vienna has been murdered in what Austrian police describe as a financially motivated crime centred on cryptocurrency.
The victim, Danylo Kuzmin, disappeared last week and was reported missing by his family. His body was later found inside a burning car in the underground car park of a luxury hotel in Vienna’s Donaustadt district, after residents alerted police to the fire. The vehicle, which carried Ukrainian licence plates, belonged to Kuzmin.
Ukrainian media have identified Kuzmin as the son of Sergey Kuzmin, a deputy mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Austrian authorities have said there is no evidence to suggest a political motive and have framed the case as a targeted crime driven by money.
At a press conference, Colonel Gerhard Winkler, head of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, said investigators believe the young man was abducted by fellow Ukrainian nationals who were seeking access to his crypto assets. Police say the attackers gained control of two of Kuzmin’s crypto wallets, both of which were emptied. Officials have not disclosed the value of the assets taken.
According to investigators, Kuzmin was attacked inside the Sofitel hotel, where surveillance footage shows him being overpowered and beaten. He was then placed in the back seat of a Mercedes-Benz, which was later set on fire. Forensic examinations found clear signs of violence and severe burns, with asphyxiation or heat shock identified as the likely cause of death.
Two suspects, aged 19 and 45, have been arrested in Ukraine following an investigation supported by Ukrainian authorities and Europol. Austrian police say the men fled Vienna shortly after the killing. A large amount of cash, including US dollars, was found on one of the suspects at the time of arrest, and investigators believe it is connected to the same crime.
Local media reports suggest the younger suspect was a fellow student who allegedly lured Kuzmin before the attack. Police allege the victim was tortured until he revealed access details for his wallets. These claims have not yet been tested in court.
The suspects are expected to be prosecuted in Ukraine, with Austrian authorities preparing to transfer the case to their counterparts there. Colonel Winkler said this approach reflects jurisdictional arrangements and cooperation between the two countries.
The case has drawn attention to the personal security risks faced by some cryptocurrency holders, particularly when assets are known or assumed to be substantial. Law enforcement officials have cautioned against drawing broader conclusions from a single case, noting that violent crime linked to digital assets remains relatively rare compared with other forms of financial crime.
At the same time, the murder adds to a recent series of high-profile deaths in the region where cryptocurrency has featured as a possible factor. These incidents, while varied in circumstance, have fuelled debate about how wealth held in digital form can expose individuals to new types of threat, especially in the absence of traditional safeguards.
For now, Austrian police say their investigation into Kuzmin’s death has established a clear picture of events, even as legal proceedings move to another jurisdiction. The focus, they say, remains on ensuring those responsible are held to account.
