Dominic Williams pushes vision of the ‘self-writing cloud’ with new chart

Dominic Williams has shared a new chart outlining his view of how AI will reshape the cloud market, describing the future as one driven by what he calls the self-writing cloud. His message was concise: “If you believe in AI, then you believe in self-writing cloud.” The post linked this direction to ICP and Caffeine, the Internet Computer’s conversational app-building platform.

The chart shows a gradual shift from traditional software development towards applications that are created and managed autonomously by AI. According to Williams, this model becomes dominant as AI systems grow more capable and cost-efficient, eventually taking up most of the non-GPU cloud market. The Internet Computer team has increasingly positioned ICP as an infrastructure layer built for this evolution, highlighting its focus on running full applications directly onchain.

The post drew a detailed response from Fabio, a data analyst who pointed to current performance metrics to illustrate the trend. He noted that one ICP subnet is already processing more useful work than several major chains combined, including ADA, SOL, AVAX, ETH, NEAR and SUI. He added that ICP remains the only blockchain able to run AI fully onchain, citing the example of DeepSeek operating inside a canister smart contract.

These observations reflect a growing interest in how AI-driven app creation might interact with blockchain execution environments. Supporters of the Internet Computer see the chain’s architecture as well suited to workloads that rely on automation and continuous computation. As Caffeine continues to promote conversational app building and ICP emphasises its capacity for onchain AI, Williams’ chart offers a snapshot of how the project imagines the cloud evolving.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.
