AWS Outage in Bahrain Draws Attention as Dom Points to ICP Alternative

An outage affecting Amazon Web Services in Bahrain has brought renewed focus to cloud reliability, after reports linked the disruption to drone activity tied to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

AWS services in the Bahrain region were impacted, with customers shifting workloads to other regions as recovery efforts continue. The company has not shared details on the extent of the damage or when full service will return. The incident follows an earlier disruption this month affecting facilities in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates due to power issues.

The development prompted a response from Dominic Williams, who highlighted an alternative approach through the Internet Computer Protocol. In a post on X, he said applications hosted on ICP “cloud engines” running across multiple data centres could remain unaffected by localised outages such as the one reported in Bahrain.

His remarks point to how decentralised infrastructure is positioned to operate across distributed networks, aiming to reduce reliance on a single region or provider. Supporters say this structure can help maintain continuity during disruptions that affect specific locations.

AWS, which operates a global network of data centres, typically relies on regional redundancy to manage outages. However, events linked to physical infrastructure or regional instability can still lead to service interruptions and require customers to reroute operations.

The Bahrain incident highlights how different infrastructure models approach reliability, as organisations continue to weigh performance, reach and resilience when managing digital services.
