ICP Releases icp-cli v0.1.0 With Snapshot Tools and Simpler Installation

The Internet Computer ecosystem has reached a new milestone for developers with the official release of icp-cli v0.1.0, a command-line tool designed to make building and deploying applications on ICP faster and more approachable.

After several months in beta and ongoing community feedback, the first stable version is now available, bringing a smoother installation process alongside a range of features aimed at everyday developer workflows.

One of the clearest improvements is how easy it is to get started. Developers can now install the tool directly through npm with a single command, and the CLI automatically downloads the correct binary for macOS, Linux, or Windows. That removes much of the friction that often comes with setting up blockchain development environments.

The v0.1.0 release also introduces full snapshot lifecycle management for canisters, giving teams the ability to create, list, restore, and delete snapshots of canister state. This kind of functionality can be particularly useful when testing upgrades, preparing rollbacks, or managing more complex deployments where state preservation matters.

Another update is proxy call support, enabled through a new flag that allows canister calls to be routed via a proxy canister. The option to include cycles in proxied calls adds further flexibility for developers working with different execution and cost requirements.

Security and identity management also receive attention in this release. icp-cli now supports Hardware Security Module identities for transaction signing, alongside expanded identity controls such as exporting PEM files, renaming identities, and cleaning up unused ones. These additions reflect a growing focus on operational security as more developers build production applications on ICP.

The tool also introduces new canister settings, including log visibility controls, allowing developers to better manage who can access canister logs. Alongside this, documentation is now versioned, making it easier to match references to the specific CLI version installed.

While this release marks the first official step, the team notes that further improvements are already in progress, including active work on canister migration support.

The developers behind icp-cli are encouraging the community to test the new version and share feedback through GitHub Issues. They are also pushing towards an additional goal: getting icp-cli listed as an official Homebrew package. To meet Homebrew’s inclusion requirements, the repositories need to reach a threshold of GitHub stars, and users are being asked to support the effort.

With v0.1.0 now live, icp-cli is shaping up as an important piece of infrastructure for developers looking to build and ship applications on the Internet Computer with fewer setup hurdles and more robust tooling.
