Dominic Williams wants blockchain to compete with Amazon, not just Ethereum. The DFINITY founder has revealed a new direction for the Internet Computer — one that transforms it from a decentralised blockchain network into a user-friendly, high-performance cloud platform.
The idea centres on “cloud engines”, private subnets that anyone can create by combining independent nodes across the Internet Computer network. Through a built-in configurator managed by the Network Nervous System (NNS), developers and enterprises will be able to spin up their own decentralised cloud environments in minutes — no crypto know-how required.
Each engine will run across nodes from different providers and regions, ensuring diversity and uptime. For users, this means the resilience of decentralisation wrapped in the ease of a traditional cloud experience. In the background, complex mechanics like token conversion into cycles will be hidden. On the surface, customers will simply use a credit card to pay for compute power, just like they would with AWS or Google Cloud.
Crucially, DFINITY is working to let Internet Computer nodes run on both sovereign hardware and cloud instances. That hybrid setup will allow engines to operate across traditional data centres and major providers like Amazon or Google, keeping apps online even during outages.
It’s a major rethink of how blockchain infrastructure should meet the world. Rather than selling the ideology of decentralisation, DFINITY wants to sell a product that performs — apps that are tamperproof, unstoppable, and scalable by design. Engine owners will be able to expand capacity without rewriting code, adding nodes to scale queries or splitting engines to grow memory and compute power.
Williams calls this a path to mainstream adoption: a “serverless cloud powered by blockchain”. If it works, it could quietly move blockchain from the fringes of fintech into the core of enterprise computing — where cloud meets chain without anyone noticing the difference.
Dear Reader,
Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.
We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.
If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.
Your support goes a long way.
