Ordinals update brings new tools for on-chain metadata as Casey Rodarmor targets cleaner provenance

Casey Rodarmor, the creator of the Runes and Ordinals protocol, has announced the release of ord 0.24.2, marking another attempt to bring more collection metadata on chain and reduce the dependence on centralised sources. The update introduces expanded structured metadata, including titles and traits, which can be added to both inscriptions and gallery items.

Rodarmor said the goal is to make it easier for older or technically constrained collections to shift their attribution data on chain. Many well-known collections were created before parent and child mechanics existed or were built in ways that made that structure difficult to use. Although parent and child remains the strongest way to prove provenance, it does not cover the full ecosystem.

To address this gap, the protocol introduced galleries, which allow an inscription to list a set of other inscriptions. Galleries do not establish authorship, since anyone can create them, but they reduce the volume of off-chain metadata required to maintain a collection. Once a gallery ID is known, users can pull all linked metadata directly from the chain.

The latest release builds on that approach. Titles allow creators to add a simple text label to an inscription, while traits function as name-value mappings that define attributes. Supporters of the update see this as a way to give older collections a structured on-chain home without forcing them to retrofit parent and child logic. Rodarmor said the aim is to help the ecosystem move away from reliance on external databases and platforms that currently act as metadata hubs.

Ordinals tooling has drawn attention throughout the year, with some praising the push for more transparent and durable metadata, while others argue that the ecosystem is still finding its footing and must address concerns around compatibility, indexing and long-term maintenance. This update is likely to prompt further debate, particularly as creators weigh whether moving metadata on chain changes how collections are interpreted or valued.

The release notes, available on GitHub, include the full set of additions and clarifications. Rodarmor urged users not to ask about versions 0.24.0 or 0.24.1, hinting at internal adjustments made before settling on the public build. As more creators test the new features, the wider Ordinals community will be watching to see how quickly off-chain collections take advantage of the expanded metadata tools.
