19-Year-Old Student Sells AI Traffic Detection System to Hong Kong Administration

A 19-year-old student from China, Zhang Wei, has developed an AI-powered traffic detection system and sold it to authorities in Hong Kong for $550,000.

The system, which was reportedly built in around a month using Claude AI tools and a development cost of about $20, is designed to detect speeding vehicles in real time using camera feeds.

According to details shared, Zhang presented the project directly to officials, demonstrating the system on a flash drive before receiving approval shortly after the meeting.

The technology connects to a camera system that records vehicle speeds. When a vehicle exceeds the limit, the software triggers a video recording, identifies the number plate, and generates an automated notification that can be sent to the vehicle owner’s email.

Supporters of AI-driven enforcement tools say systems like this could reduce disputes around speeding fines by providing video-based evidence rather than still images. Traditional traffic enforcement systems typically rely on fixed cameras that capture photographs, which can sometimes lead to challenges in interpretation.

The arrangement has drawn attention for its low development cost and rapid turnaround, as well as the growing use of AI tools in practical enforcement and administrative systems. Details of the system’s technical configuration were not independently verified.
