Bitcoin Meets ICP: Hackathon Sparks Winning Innovations

The ICP Chain Fusion Hackathon: Bitcoin Edition has wrapped up, bringing together developers to explore the intersection of Bitcoin and the Internet Computer’s capabilities. Over four weeks, participants were tasked with creating solutions that integrate Bitcoin directly into the ICP ecosystem, resulting in a collection of standout projects. The event was supported by DFINITY and showcased the creativity and technical expertise of contributors eager to bridge these technologies.

The top prize for Best Overall Use of Bitcoin Integration went to icRamp, a decentralised platform enabling seamless management of Bitcoin-native assets such as Runes and Ordinals within the ICP ecosystem. By leveraging Taproot transactions and smart contract functionality, icRamp demonstrated the potential of multi-chain integration with Bitcoin. Their efforts earned them a $15,000 ICP Developer Grant.

Runic Swap took home the award for Best Use of Bitcoin API. This AMM-based decentralised exchange simplifies token swaps involving Bitcoin, ICP, and ckBTC, using ICP’s Bitcoin integration to facilitate advanced decentralised finance applications. The project was recognised with a $5,000 grant.

Another $5,000 grant was awarded to BTC Giftcards, which clinched the Best Use of ckBTC prize. Their platform reimagines Bitcoin gifting by integrating ckBTC to enable smooth and user-friendly transfers, all hosted securely on the Internet Computer. This innovation opens the door for gifting Bitcoin in a manner as straightforward as sending a card.

The event featured live workshops to guide participants, including insights into using ICP as a Bitcoin Layer 2 solution and creating a decentralised Bitcoin mining pool. Highlights included Jessie Mongeon and Oleksandr Tkachenko’s deep dive into ICP’s capabilities, showcasing Chain Key cryptography, Threshold Schnorr signatures, and Taproot transactions. Andy Fajar Handika presented an innovative protocol allowing miners to sell future hash rates, providing a lifeline for small miners and investment opportunities for others.

As the hackathon ends, the momentum continues with Encode programmes and upcoming events focusing on blockchain, accelerators, and generative AI. These initiatives promise to further inspire the next wave of developers. For the winning teams and all participants, the hackathon has been a launchpad to bring bold ideas into the ever-expanding world of decentralised innovation.
