Despite a higher price tag of £176,000, this figure is a significant 20% less than traditional construction methods. While initial construction took 54 hours, followed by four months of finishing work, the project’s pioneers are optimistic that similar structures could now be produced in just 33 hours.

However, the sticker price of 3D printed buildings can be misleading. The headline costs often ignore crucial factors such as labor, printer cost (purchase or rental), as well as the finishings and foundational work like wiring and plumbing. Thus, the true cost of a habitable 3D printed building is likely closer to the Nantes project’s final figure.

Despite these realities, the benefits of 3D printed houses cannot be dismissed. The exactitude in using building materials significantly reduces waste, making these houses a win for the environment. Labor costs are significantly reduced, allowing for a more cost-effective build. Traditional building methods could take up to six months, while a 3D printed structure can be completed in a day. This new method also enables customization, with accurate and intricate designs, potentially revolutionizing the way homes are designed and built.

Moreover, the social implications of this technology are profound. The fast-paced, affordable, and minimal labor-intensive nature of 3D printing could transform crisis-stricken areas, providing basic shelter structures swiftly when needed.

In addition, notable ventures worldwide are pushing boundaries. The Apis Cor house, printed in just 24 hours, the ICON & New Story project in Austin, Texas, and the 3D printed neighborhood in Coachella all signify the promise of this new technology.
