Mission 70 Could Redefine Internet Computer’s Economics, But Questions Remain

The DFINITY Foundation has published a detailed white paper called Mission 70, proposing to reduce the inflation rate of the Internet Computer (ICP) token by about 70 per cent by the end of 2026. The plan combines cuts to token issuance with measures intended to boost real use of the network’s on-chain compute resources.

Under the current model, new ICP tokens are created and distributed as rewards to governance participants and node operators. That process has kept annual inflation relatively high, diluting existing holders’ share over time. Mission 70 seeks to shrink that issuance significantly by lowering those reward rates and adjusting other economic parameters. Proponents argue this could help ease persistent sell pressure from freshly minted tokens.

To complement supply-side changes, the white paper counts on expanded demand for the network’s computing capacity. Projects such as Caffeine, an AI-oriented suite of tools that runs on ICP’s infrastructure, and emerging “cloud engines” are expected to increase the network’s consumption of computational units known as Cycles. Because Cycles are created by burning ICP tokens, higher usage would, in theory, remove tokens from circulation.

Market reaction has so far been positive. ICP’s trading price rose in the days following the announcement, and on-chain metrics such as falling exchange balances have been interpreted by some analysts as signs of increased long-term holding interest.

At the same time, several uncertainties remain. Achieving the plan’s demand targets depends on meaningful adoption of resource-intensive applications and enterprise interest in on-chain compute — areas where growth has been uneven. The broader ecosystem around ICP, including decentralised finance activity and liquidity levels, remains smaller than many peers, and critics question whether planned usage volumes will materialise quickly enough to sustain the proposed burn mechanisms.

Another point of debate among community participants is the potential impact of higher on-chain compute costs. Some see increased prices as a necessary signal to attract serious workloads; others worry that they could deter smaller developers and projects without significant budgetary resources.

The white paper itself acknowledges trade-offs and transitional risks. Changes to reward structures will require governance approval and may shift incentives for participants who have helped secure the network. Whether the combination of economic tweaks and new compute demand delivers the envisaged outcome will become clearer as the ecosystem evolves.

Balanced scrutiny of Mission 70 suggests it could reshape aspects of ICP’s token economy, yet it also highlights the close link between technical execution and market confidence. For observers and participants alike, measurable usage growth and stable network participation will be key to judging the plan’s impact.
