A conversation on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked fresh debate over inflation on the Internet Computer (ICP) network. The emerging consensus: node providers contribute only a small portion of the inflation, leaving open questions about broader token dynamics.
AOP_DeFi kicked things off with a firm message: “Rumours are going around that node providers are the reason for ICP inflation. It’s false.” They shared numbers showing node providers minted around 17.25 million ICP, while the Network Nervous System (NNS) generated over 156 million ICP in governance rewards. That places node provider-driven inflation at roughly 11 percent of the total NNS-related inflation.
The discussion quickly turned toward the impact on the market. PokedStudioUK asked how much of that newly minted ICP actually enters active trading. AOP_DeFi suggested that most of it ends up on centralised exchanges, pointing out that distribution patterns make shorting opportunities possible—but, they added, that’s true for any known token release schedule on the network.
PokedStudioUK responded that, until recently, a large portion of disbursed rewards had been reinvested into the ecosystem. AOP_DeFi disputed that and encouraged fact-checking via the GeekFactory app, which shows only around 11.35 million ICP deposited across all SNS accounts. This compares with the ecosystem’s total locked value (TVL) of just under 3.9 million ICP, suggesting many rewards simply remain outside project reinvestment.
IC_Potential chimed in to point out that node provider rewards aren’t the core driver of inflation, although some argue node operation may now be more profitable than staking long-term. Whether adjustments are warranted is worth discussing, they said, since NNS stakers have shouldered most of the risk to date.
NeilHillman added another layer, reminding everyone that while new ICP supports governance rewards, it also gets burned when developers pay for cycles to run smart contracts. The more the network is used—from AI to DeFi—the more ICP gets burned, creating a counterbalance. Locking tokens in neurons further throttles liquid supply, while release schedules and decaying reward curves are part of a built-in transition toward deflationary mechanics as activity grows.
Still, some users raised concerns. Chief Indo asked if the community was giving up on “more burn,” while ICPFinder countered that rising prices reduce burn effectiveness, and inflation continues to outpace that. Chief Indo described annual inflation rates at around 6 percent theoretical, and approximately 3 percent in actual terms. Lower demand, they warned, can’t be solved by tokenomics alone—user adoption must lead.
ICPFinder reiterated that reducing inflation would help, but emphasised that burn mechanics tied to XDR pricing limit impact. He noted that other blockchains use demand-based fees using their native tokens—a model that ICP hasn’t adopted.
Summing up the debate, the community appears to agree that node providers play a role in inflation, but only a minor one. Governance rewards, token vesting and unlock schedules, and limited burn rates all contribute to supply pressure. The long-term outlook depends on whether rising adoption can shift the economy from mint-heavy to burn-led, turning inflation into neutrality—or even deflation.
