Motoko Extension Brings Internet Computer Development to Zed Editor

Developers working on the Internet Computer have a new option on their desks with the release of a Motoko extension for the Zed editor. The extension, contributed by the community, adds native support for Motoko and Candid, two languages closely tied to building applications on the network. Its arrival reflects growing interest in broader tooling choices beyond more established editors.

The extension offers syntax highlighting and language server support, aiming to make day to day development smoother and more responsive. Zed itself is known for its focus on performance, and the addition of Motoko support aligns with that philosophy. For developers already using Zed, this removes the need to switch environments when working on Internet Computer projects.

Under the hood, the extension draws on several open source components. Tree-sitter is used for both Motoko and Candid, with repositories maintained by contributors linked to the Internet Computer ecosystem. Language server support for Motoko comes from work already familiar to users of the VS Code Motoko extension. By building on existing tools rather than reinventing them, the project leans on code that has already seen real world use.

The setup does come with some prerequisites. Certain tasks require the IC SDK, Mops and mo-dev to be installed, which may add friction for newcomers. Formatting is handled through a Prettier-based solution, configurable via a project level prettierrc file. Developers who prefer a lighter touch can disable formatting through Zed’s settings, giving some flexibility in how opinionated the tooling becomes.

As with many community-led releases, this extension is likely to evolve based on feedback and adoption. It does not replace more mature setups overnight, particularly for teams already invested in other editors and workflows. Some developers may also wait to see how quickly issues are addressed and features expanded before committing to it for production work.

Still, the release signals a steady widening of the Internet Computer’s developer tooling landscape. Support for Motoko and Candid in Zed lowers one more barrier for those curious about building on the platform, while giving existing developers another environment to choose from. Over time, the measure of success will rest on reliability, maintenance and how well the extension keeps pace with changes in the languages themselves.
