Anthropic reportedly plans $15 billion push into Australian data centres

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company led by chief executive Dario Amodei and best known for developing the Claude chatbot, is reportedly planning a major expansion in Australia, with a proposal to secure up to 1.4 gigawatts of data centre capacity by mid 2027 in a project that could cost as much as $15 billion.

According to reports, the US based AI company is seeking to secure as much Australian data centre capacity as can be delivered within the next year, reflecting the growing demand for computing infrastructure needed to train and operate advanced artificial intelligence models.

The proposal is understood to involve discussions with several of Australia’s largest data centre operators. Anthropic is reportedly exploring long term agreements for new facilities, while also considering partnerships to develop dedicated AI infrastructure capable of supporting future growth.

Reports suggest the company hopes to have at least one gigawatt of computing capacity available by the end of 2027, with the overall project potentially reaching 1.4 gigawatts. Industry estimates place the investment at up to $15 billion, which would make it one of the largest AI infrastructure projects proposed in Australia.

Companies linked to the reported process include CDC Data Centres, AirTrunk, NEXTDC, IREN and Stack Infrastructure, although no agreements have been announced.

The reported investment reflects Anthropic’s broader strategy under Dario Amodei to expand the computing resources required to compete with other leading AI developers. Demand for data centres has risen rapidly as companies race to build increasingly capable AI systems, placing pressure on electricity networks and creating strong competition for suitable sites.

Australia has attracted growing interest from global technology firms because of its expanding data centre industry, reliable regulatory environment and increasing supply of renewable energy. Sydney and Melbourne remain the country’s largest data centre markets, with further developments planned over the coming years.

The proposal has also renewed discussion around the environmental and infrastructure demands of large scale AI facilities. Data centres require substantial electricity and cooling, leading industry experts and local communities to call for careful planning to ensure power supplies, water resources and grid capacity can support future projects.

Separate reports have suggested Anthropic has sought greater clarity around Australia’s copyright framework for AI training. The issue remains under discussion as governments around the world consider how copyright laws should apply to artificial intelligence systems. The Australian Government has maintained that creators should continue to be protected under existing copyright principles while consultation on future policy continues.

Anthropic has not publicly confirmed the reported investment plans. If the project proceeds, it would further strengthen Australia’s position as a destination for global AI infrastructure and reflect the growing competition among technology companies to secure the computing capacity needed for the next generation of artificial intelligence.
